DACOR: Salon - Politics Beyond the Water's Edge - Dealing with Allies, Adversaries and Others in the Decades Ahead

Start Date/Time:
Tuesday, February 12, 2019 - 18:30
End Date/Time:
Tuesday, February 12, 2019 - 21:00
Description:

The topic for the evening continues the salon's focus on challenges to American diplomacy in the 21st century. Given that a bipartisan consensus guided U.S. diplomacy through the decades after World War II, we are confronted today with a fraying consensus on shared values and interests. Questions we ask are:

  • Does such a consensus, at home and abroad, still prevail? Should we renew and continue to pursue such a consensus in formulating foreign policy and conducting foreign relations?
  • Will such a consensus-based diplomacy ensure that American values and interests remain a key factor in the global order?
  • What are the top two or three strategic-level issues that the United States needs to address in the mid-to-long term?

Ambassador Roger Noriega served as Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs as well as Ambassador to the OAS. He has received numerous awards for public service for the promotion of human rights and democracy in the Americas, and is a visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and the founder of his own firm, Visión Américas LLC.
