End Date/Time:

Description:

AFSA is pleased to host a Networking Happy Hour focused on teaching at the university level on Thursday, February 27 between 4:30 and 6:30 at AFSA headquarters, 2101 E St NW. Our aim is to create an opportunity for Foreign Service personnel who have transitioned from their government careers to teaching international affairs and the art of diplomacy to network with each other and to be available as a resource to those who aspire to teach.

AFSA is sponsoring this Happy Hour to help facilitate the exchange of ideas, tips, and advice on how to make the transition to academia, what to expect when you get there, and resources available. The Happy Hour is an amplifier of the January/February 2020 Foreign Service Journal (FSJ) cover story, “Teaching Diplomacy Today: Post-Foreign Service Opportunities in Academia” and AFSA’s Next Stage program and resultant video on “Teaching International Affairs and the Art of Diplomacy: A Viable ‘Next Stage’ for You?”, which took place in March 2019. AFSA President Eric Rubin plans to be present, as well as one of the authors of the FSJ article, retired FSO Jillian Burns. For further information on the initiative as a whole, see AFSA’s webpage on “Sharing Wisdom (And Curricula!) About Teaching Diplomacy, International Affairs, and Other Associated Topics.”

AFSA considers this initiative not only a valuable service to members, but also a significant step in building an understanding of diplomacy and its importance to the security and prosperity of the United States, a critical part of AFSA’s mission.
