LOCAL LENS BY ÁSGEIR SIGFÚSSON n HELSINKI, FINLAND O n a beautiful June day in Helsinki, I crawled underneath the Sibelius Monument to get a somewhat unusual view of this very beautiful sculpture by Finnish artist Eila Hiltunen. Unveiled in 1967, this sound wave–like work weighs 24 tons and comprises more than 600 hollow steel pipes welded together, the tallest reaching 27 feet in the air. The landmark is dedicated to Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), whose bust appears by its side. n Ásgeir Sigfússon is the executive director of the American Foreign Service Association. He loves to travel the world and always tastes each country’s national dish, even when it includes tripe. He took this photo in 2022 using an iPhone 13 Pro.
