The building, its architecture based on the Finnish tradition of simple design existing harmoniously with natural surroundings, established a powerful progressive presence for Finland at its comple- tion in 1994. In subsequent years, embassy staff made it a priority to decrease the structure’s environmental impact. It was the first foreign embassy in the United States to receive the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star and the first to receive LEED certification.
