T his photo is a bit of a “view askew” of the To-ji Temple in Kyoto, Japan, one which puts the temple’s elaborate woodwork into stark relief. The temple is Japan’s tallest wooden tower and stands 180 feet high. The five-story pagoda dates back to 796, in the early Heian period. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site—one of many such sites in Kyoto. n Ásgeir Sigfússon, a native of Iceland, is AFSA’s communications director.
