A F S A N E W S AFSA is proud to feature the 26 Foreign Service high school seniors select- ed as the 2010 AFSAMerit Award winners, who collectively received a total of $35,700 in scholarships. On Foreign Affairs Day, May 7, those winners in the area took part in the annual merit awards ceremony. AFSA congratulates all the winners and runners-up for their academic and artistic achievements. Winners received $1,800 awards, and honorable mentionwinners received $800 awards. The best-essay winner and the com- munity-service winner each received $250. Judges weremembers of AFSA’s Committee onEducation and individuals fromthe ForeignService community. This year, 70 students competed for the 15AcademicMerit Awards. They were judged on grade-point averages, SAT scores, essays, letters of recom- mendation, extracurricular activities and other factors. From the Academic Merit Award applicants, a best-essaywinner (MarleneHaggblade) and a com- munity-service winner (Abigail Einhorn) were selected. Fourteen students submitted art merit applications under one of the fol- lowing categories: visual arts, musical arts, drama and creative writing. Each art applicant was judged on his or her art submission, two letters of recom- mendation and an essay. CynthiaMiller was selected as the ArtMerit Award winner for her poetry submissions, and she was also an Academic Merit HonorableMentionAwardwinner. LorrayneDever andKatrina Ternus were selected as the ArtMerit HonorableMentionAwardwinners. Both students submitted drawings and/or paintings under the Visual Arts category. Eight AcademicMerit named scholarships have been established to date, and these awards were bestowed to the highest-scoring students. The recip- ients of these scholarships were: Stephen Kwong, receiving the Associates of the American Foreign Service Worldwide Scholarship; Marlene Haggblade, receiving the John and Priscilla Becker Family Scholarship; AbrahamChaibi andMichael Fogarasi, receiving the Turner C. LearyMemorial Scholarship; Alexander Koenig and Patrick McGuire, receiving the Joanna and Robert Martin Scholarships; and LindseyHunt, receiving theDonald S.Memorial andMaria Giuseppa Spigler Scholarship.
