T wo students commemorate their graduation by posing for a picture at the Confucius Temple in Tainan, the oldest city on the island of Taiwan. Built in 1665, Tainan’s Confucius Temple was co n- ceived as part of a complex for higher education and scholarship. The temple continues to play a symbolic role associated with education in the life of the city. Ancient Confucian ceremonies related to education are still being conducted on a regular basis at the temple. Following a custom found elsewhere in the Chinese-speaking world, many local students come to the temple to pray for success before taking their final examinations. n FSO William Klein has served as chief of the political section at the American Institute in Taiwan since 2013.
