These umbrella pines provide welcome shade along the Main Street of Ostia Antica, an ancient Roman port town that was home to 100,000 inhabitants at its peak in the second and third centuries A.D. Once at the mouth of the Tiber River, Ostia Antica is now an archaeological site some three kilometers from the sea and is known for the excellent preservation of its ancient buildings, magnificent frescoes and impressive mosaics. n FSO Matthew L. Horner currently serves in Washington, D.C., as the Finland and Estonia desk officer in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs’ Office of Nordic and Baltic Affairs.
