THE FOREIGN SERVICE JOURNAL | SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2026 75 “Poppi,” as he was known to his grandchildren, played nearly as hard as he worked. Whether it was playing tennis, swimming, skiing, or super-gluing chipped dinnerware, Dr. Rennick lived his life with passion and a smile. Family members point out that when he was laid to rest at the Eagle Point Veterans’ Administration cemetery in southern Oregon on May 6, he was finally able to wear his “I’m Going Underground” London Tube T-shirt, purchased more than 30 years earlier for the occasion. Dr. Rennick is survived by his life partner, Judy; their four children, Terri, Marc, Julie, and Angela; the children’s spouses, Mark, Apryl, Nick, and Alex; eight grandchildren; and two brothers, Sam (and spouse, Anne) and Chay (and spouse, Ann). The family suggests that in Dr. Rennick’s memory, one go to a baseball game, play train dominoes, be kind to one another, offer a listening ear, and save lives by giving blood. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Rotary PolioPlus, Access Oregon, Blood Cancer United, or American Red Cross. n David Bruce Wharton, 72, a retired Foreign Service officer and former ambassador to Zimbabwe, passed away on April 14, 2026, at his home in Asheville, N.C. Mr. Wharton was born in Basel, Switzerland, on March 23, 1954, to James Allen Wharton and Charlotte Mickey Wharton, the first of three boys. His grandparents had been missionaries in Africa, and his father’s work as a theologian and Presbyterian minister took the family between Switzerland, Germany, and Texas throughout the boys’ childhood.
