Washington, D.C. – The American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) is deeply alarmed by the abrupt and opaque dismantling of USAID, which has caused profound disruption to our members’ lives and careers. This move shows a clear disregard for the dedication and expertise of USAID staff, including Foreign Service members whose work has always been focused on serving the American people and advancing U.S. interests abroad.

The decision was communicated through an email titled “USAID’s Last Mission”—a dismissive and inappropriate way to notify dedicated public servants of such a drastic action. This approach reflects a fundamental violation of established rules and processes, and disrespect for the people who have devoted their careers to serving America.

AFSA will continue to press for accountability, advocate for the dignity and rights of our members, and defend the core principles of a professional, nonpartisan Foreign Service. This is not how public servants should be treated, and we will not stand by as their work and contributions are disrespected and dismantled.

The American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) is the professional association and labor union of the men and women of the United States Foreign Service.
