Washington, D.C. – May 24, 2024 – Today, the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) marks the 100th anniversary of the enactment of the Rogers Act, the landmark legislation that established the modern United States Foreign Service. This pivotal moment in American history combined our diplomatic and consular services and established a professional corps, providing that the most skilled and dedicated individuals would be chosen to represent our nation's interests abroad.
For the last century, the men and women of the Foreign Service have served on the frontlines of global history, tirelessly advancing our national interests and promoting our values. These dedicated public servants are America’s first line of defense; they protect Americans overseas and navigate increasingly complex international challenges while managing relationships with allies and adversaries alike. The job of an American diplomat can be dangerous –as evidenced by the 321 names on the memorial plaques in the main lobby of the U.S. State Department. Many members of the Foreign Service serve in dangerous and inhospitable places, risking their lives in service to our country. The centennial provides us the ideal opportunity to honor their sacrifices and recognize their vital contributions to American security and prosperity.
The year 1924 also marks a century since the founding of AFSA as the professional association of the Foreign Service. Since our founding, AFSA has grown to represent nearly 17,000 members across six federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Foreign Agricultural Service, the Foreign Commercial Service, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, and the U.S. Agency for Global Media.
As AFSA commemorates a century of exemplary service, we rededicate ourselves to supporting a strong Foreign Service for the next 100 years—a future where American diplomacy continues to inspire, uplift, and create lasting positive change.
