Description:

AFSA is honored to host a panel discussion about the new PBS American Experience documentary, The American Diplomat, which tells the story of three pioneering American diplomats: Terence Todman, Carl Rowan and Edward Dudley. Join us as three of the film’s producers – Kiley Kraskouskas, Rachell Shapiro and Leola Calzolai-Stewart – discuss the film and the important history behind it. The event will be moderated by AFSA President Amb. Eric Rubin and Maria Hart, a member of the AFSA Governing Board. The discussion will take place via Zoom on Monday February 28 at 1:00 p.m. EST. Click here to register.

The American Diplomat explores the lives and legacies of three African American ambassadors who pushed past historical and institutional racial barriers to reach high-ranking appointments in the Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations. At the height of the civil rights movement in the United States, the three men were asked to represent the best of American ideals abroad while facing discrimination at home.

We encourage members to watch the one-hour film prior to the discussion; you can do so by clicking here. Following the formal conversation, there will be an opportunity for audience Q&A. Click here to register.
