A Century of Service. A Fight that Continues.

America spent decades building the expertise to evacuate citizens from danger and respond to crises around the world. When that expertise is lost, the consequences reach far beyond the people whose jobs were cut.

AFSA is helping Americans understand those consequences and giving lawmakers evidence to examine the decisions behind them. With our next workforce report, we have an opportunity to bring Foreign Service members’ experiences directly to congressional offices and newsrooms.

The Missing Badge: Seven members of Congress spoke at this Capitol Hill exhibit and press conference alongside former State Department and USAID employees. Coverage included NPR and Federal News Network, carrying their accounts of lost expertise to audiences across the country.

The State of the Foreign Service Workforce Report: AFSA’s survey reporting gives members a way to describe what is happening inside the Foreign Service and provides evidence for public scrutiny. Our forthcoming 2026 report builds on that work. Your support helps us share its findings with policymakers and reporters who can bring them to wider attention.

Advocacy: In 2024, AFSA protected 2/3 of D.C. locality pay for Foreign Service members abroad through 2034. We also successfully advocated for the government to cover federal employees’ health insurance from day one.
