An executive order halting automatic union dues deductions poses the most serious challenge in AFSA’s 100-year history. Your gift to the Challenge Fund will be matched—dollar-for-dollar—up to $100,000.
AFSA stands at a critical juncture. For the first time in our organization’s history, an executive order has halted the automatic deduction of union dues—placing at risk the essential work we do to support, defend, and advocate for the U.S. Foreign Service. This change represents an estimated shortfall of up to 40% of our annual budget, threatening the stability of AFSA’s operations if not addressed quickly.
While we are actively pursuing legal remedies, your immediate action is vital. The Challenge Fund, fueled by a generous $100,000 matching gift from a retired Foreign Service officer, will help sustain AFSA’s operations during this unprecedented period.
Every dollar given to the Challenge Fund is directed to sustaining AFSA’s operations during this unprecedented period. AFSA is committed to fiscal transparency and accountability to its members and supporters.
Defending the Foreign Service in Court: Since January 20, 2025, AFSA has been in federal court, fighting to defend the Foreign Service against sweeping executive actions that strip our members of collective‑bargaining rights and dismantle agencies like USAID and USAGM.
Representation: In 2024, AFSA assisted more than 2,000 members with grievance cases and inquiries.
Advocacy: In 2024, AFSA protected 2/3 of D.C. locality pay for Foreign Service members abroad through 2034. We also successfully advocated for the government to cover federal employees’ health insurance from day one.
Membership: In 2024, AFSA distributed nearly $400,000 in scholarships to Foreign Service youth.
Thanks to the generosity of a retired Foreign Service member, every contribution to the Challenge Fund will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $100,000, through September 30.
In more than a century of service, AFSA has never faced a challenge this existential. Your support today will help ensure we remain a strong, independent voice for the Foreign Service well into the future.
