The primary goal of AFSA’s demographic survey, completed in late 2022, was to gather comprehensive data on the geographic backgrounds of Foreign Service members, including where they grew up and where they currently hold legal residency if different from their place of origin. By collecting this information, the AFSA aimed to dispel the misconception that the Foreign Service was predominantly composed of individuals from specific geographic regions, particularly coastal states, and major cities. Instead, the survey sought to highlight the diverse hometowns of Foreign Service members.
